Early History
The Group was established in 1960 by Dr Tom Thomson, a Glasgow graduate in Medicine and Fellow of the Faculty of Anaesthetists, Royal College of Surgeons of England. Dr Thomson had been appointed as the first Director of Anaesthesia at the Royal Hobart Hospital in 1956 and remained in that position until he resigned in 1960. He maintains that the final straw that made him resign was the fact that the Hospital would not buy a laryngoscope for the recovery room. Dr Thomson was very successful and soon had a need for assistance. Dr Margaret Nicholson, who had been an anaesthetic Registrar at the Royal Hobart Hospital, joined him. Dr Nicholson, who was married with children, did not have any anaesthetic qualifications at that stage, but over the next few years obtained her FFARACS.
The Group continued to grow with Dr Alan Bond joining in 1966. Dr Ron Tapson in 1967, Dr Jean Oakes in 1970, Dr Robert Bown in 1973, Dr Michael Hodgson in 1976 and Dr David Carne in 1976.
With the increase in the size of The Group its home has changed. Initially located in rooms in Davey Street, it moved to rooms in Macquarie Street, then bought a building at 324 Macquarie Street and the finally to its current home at 303 Macquarie Street in 1981.
Dr Nicholson left the practice in 1976 when she decided to retrain in psychiatry, an interest developed following her work in a multi-displinary clinic. Dr Oakes left the practice in 1974, Dr Thomson when he retired in 1983, Dr Bond in 1987 when he decided to roam the world in his yacht (and didn`t get past Cairns), and Dr Tapson in 1992.
